Mateo Lopes Guzman, better known as “Mateo,” was born in the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico on October 8, 1992. Mateo is the son of Italian immigrants and spent his early years living in various towns and villages in Morelos before moving to Mexico City at age 10.
Mateo’s early influences came from his father, who worked as a truck driver and singer in local festivals across Mexico. Guzman began playing the guitar at an early age, and he credits this interest with developing his musical skills.
In 2006, Mateo moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. While living in California, he played with various bands before landing a role as a guitarist for the Mexican pop-rock band Fuego Final. In 2009, after Fuego Final disbanded, Mateo released his first solo album, titled “Nada Personal.” The album was well-received by critics and featured guest appearances from such artists as Chris Stapleton and Carlos Santana.
